The seventh drink of my thirty day book as a beverage series – and rounding out the first week – is a boba tea inspired concoction that has a butterfly tea base with a hint of lavender and cream, a berry cold foam made with vimto, and a topping of fresh strawberry puree. This drink is drawn from my paperback copy of Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, a book I’m itching to knock off the tbr.
This cover has so many wonderful hues to draw from, so I picked four distinct ones. The result was unlike anything I’ve ever tasted before but I enjoyed it!

This beverage’s name is:
‘legendboba’
Name Explained: This is the most simple of the names thus far, and it’s the first one word title. It’s not that I couldn’t think of an alliterative one, just that I couldn’t resist the temptation to turn the born into boba, hehe. I’ll be back to my usual naming tactics going forward.
Butterfly Pea Tea: I’ve never steeped or tasted this tea before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d seen it online and knew it had a vibrant blue or purple hue – both of which could work well for this cover. When I tasted it after letting it steep, it had a very mild flavor, so the splash of lavender was necessary to draw out something for the other flavors of the drink to work with. A few drops of cream was needed to brighten the color when assembling the drink.
Boba: I love boba, and knew the tapioca pearls could serve as the nice dark base for the drink. My preferred means of sweetening them is with brown sugar, so that’s what I used. You can use honey or white sugar or any sweetener of choice. After a quick boil and cool, they were ready to be used.
Berry Cold Foam: I had intended for the berry cold foam to be the red portion of the drink, but after letting it mix in the frother, it came out as a bright pink, which still was a part of the cover, but not the part I’d wanted to focus on. So the final red came about from using the strawberry puree as a separate component, but there was still some of the puree used in this foam. The vimto was used for both its color and flavor. Since I wanted the foam to remain thick, I did not add any milk to the recipe, just the cream.
Strawberry Puree: As previously mentioned, to tie the colors all together some additional strawberry puree was added to the top of the berry cold foam. Thankfully, it did not seep through due to the thickness of the layer below. And I’m glad I ended up adding it as the drink itself was not sweet.
RATING: Overall I’d give the final drink a 4.40.

Flavor Combination: Do not let my low-ish mark for the flavor combo fool you. It’s not that the flavors themselves did not work well together, just that its outcome was unlike anything I’d ever tasted. So I couldn’t say whether they were harmonious or not, they’d just morphed into a new flavor altogether. A flavor akin to a strawberry creamsicle with a twist. I believe the twist comes from the vimto – which has a sweet and tart mixed berry and spice flavor profile for anyone who’s never had it!
Ease: Nothing was complicated about the drink’s assembly, but the complexity comes from all the different parts that need to be crafted. This drink consists of four distinct layers and they each need to be prepped on their own. The strawberry puree I’d already had because of my Frankenstein drink, so if you need details on how to make the puree, that can be found here. The boba cooked rather quickly and was not made from scratch. Having learned from my Alchemist drink, I also steeped the tea in the morning and made the drink in the evening so it was completely cool and did not melt the ice.
Appearance: I couldn’t be happier with how the colors came out. I feel each hue of the cover was represented and the shades were near exact. Especially the butterfly pea tea. By itself, it was rather dark, so the splash of cream brightened it and luckily it turned into the shade of blue it needed to be.
Ways to Improve: The drink was unique, but not in a bad way. Nothing stood out, and everything mixed together into something totally new. What I’d change is either adding a different flavor or more of the lavender to the butterfly pea tea since there was so much of it, and the amount of lavender I added was not enough to impact the final creamsicle-like flavor it developed.
